Research

Survey: We used SurveyMonkey for our research session and collected 45 responses overall. The whole survey includes eight questions. The age group of participants is mainly 18 to 24 (67.5%), and the rest are 25 - 34. The gender group of participants is mainly female (67.5%), and the rest are male. Participants are primarily students (60%) and full-time employees (32.5%). 62.5% have a habit of planning their daily activities beforehand, and 37.5% don’t. Only 2.5% of our participants have excellent time management skills. And most of our participants have fair time management skills (35%), which helped us identify the many people who need to improve their time management skills. Using the mobile app could be a solution for them. We asked our participants to choose three main challenges of managing their time. And the top three reasons revealed are having too many distractions (72.5%), procrastination (50%), and lack of motivation (45%). 77.5% of our participants have used a time management app before, and many of them used the Tomato Todo app (35%). Some other apps they wrote are Apple Reminder, Apple Calendar, and Google Calendar. For those who haven’t used a time management app before, the main reason for not using it is that they didn’t see the benefit of using one, don’t have time to learn, and limited customization. The features our participants value the most are calendar integration, reminder notification, goal setting, and tracking.

Interview: During our interviews, we spoke with three individuals, two of whom are students and one who is an employee. All three of them admitted to having the habit of creating to-do lists but struggled with executing and completing them. They expressed a desire for a time management app that can motivate them to finish tasks, particularly those that are not urgent or uninteresting to them. In addition to motivation, they would like the app to provide feedback, such as reminders (with an assist feature), rewards, and time usage data analysis. Two of the individuals suggested that the app should be enjoyable to use in order to maintain user engagement.
