This feature adds significant value to the product and helps ensure that it can be enjoyed by a wider audience.

Secondly, the chess set provides an engaging and aesthetically pleasing experience. Despite being designed for accessibility, the set still incorporates visually appealing elements that enhance the overall experience for all players. This feature adds to the product's appeal and makes it more desirable.

Research on how they play…

  • Chess with velcro

  • Braille chess sets

  • Talking electronic chess

  • Feelif creator (digital chess)

  • The FIDE-affiliated International Braille Chess Association’s (IBCA) influence reaches North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. FIDE has also established a few guidelines for anyone playing a tournament game against someone who is blind.

  • Both players must announce their moves aloud

  • People who are deafblind can ask for help from assistance

  • “Talking” or tactile chess clocks must be used to ensure fair timekeeping

  • Tape recorders may be used instead of traditional scorecards so that the blind player may keep a record for future analysis.

Ideation

I took two different approaches to create the chess set. The first approach was to design a more traditional set where the pieces, such as the knights, resemble their real-life counterparts. The second approach involved a more abstract design where the pieces were not as recognizable, but with some practice; users could easily distinguish each piece. And I decided to go with the second one.

First CAD model & Render

After conducting research on existing chess products, it was found that incorporating different heights of the chess squares and braille markings is beneficial for visually impaired chess players to navigate the board. As a result, these two features were incorporated as the main design elements for the chess set.
